Akai PDP4273M 42" Plasma HDTV

With good design, excellent picture quality and affordable price this plasma made silent revolution in the market by getting sold like hot cakes. Though doesn’t look very attractive, but for sure has its own fan following. It is 42 inches when mounted diagonally and looks large.

Let’s start by discussing its picture quality, one of the main feature by which a plasma TV is rated. With a contrast ratio of 3000:1, it has a beautiful colour depth and attracts everyone with its brighter picture quality of around 1400 cm/m2, Displays 16.7 million, colours with the resolution of 1024x1024 and 160 degree viewing angle.

A 2D comb filter separates chrominance (colour) from luminance (brightness) information in the video signal for independent processing to improve picture resolution and minimize distortion. It facilitates the user to watch the programs in the native 24-frame format. To get 30 fps video in 24-frame format duplication will be done. In order to get the frame-accurate picture, 3:2 digitally corrects this image by removing the redundant information to display the frame accurate picture. Most of the display technologies like gamma correction, colour temperature controls, multiple display modes for video inputs as well as the PC input, and V-Chip parental controls that help in getting the best picture quality is embedded in this plasma TV.

For the Video input, there are three separate jacks for luminance, blue colour difference and red colour difference. This is one of the main reasons for accurate colour picture with clearer colour reproduction and less breeding.

As for as the audio is concerned, though not commendable, provides a decent audio system. The speakers are hidden in the bottom saving the space. 5 GB bandwidth is provided for transmitting pure digital video and audio signal with no degradation in the transfer. It is compatible even with 7.1-channel surround sound systems by carrying up to eight discrete audio channels. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections and signals are prevented with HDCP to prevent recording.

The bottom-mounted speaker produces 5 watts power per channel and composite AV, S-video, HDMI, PC VGA connections are available.

The main drawback of this model is its remote control which is weak, buttons are small and have to be pressed and held a little bit for the command to execute. Overall it has a great picture but with somewhat weak ability to resolve dark shades of grey & black.
